On January 8, the Hangzhou Public Security Traffic Police and China Telecom introduced a new smartphone application called "Wisdom Hangzhou." This app offers users real-time traffic updates from over 170 video monitoring points across the city, as well as free parking information nearby. The app is available for Android users by searching for "Wisdom Hangzhou" in the app store, while Apple users can download it via a QR code provided by local media.
Once installed, the app allows users to check traffic conditions, locate public parking spots, and even handle traffic violations through SMS. At a press conference, journalists and citizens experienced the convenience of the app firsthand. By using the "Hangzhou Hangzhou" mobile client, users can access live video feeds from nearly 170 key road cameras, including those in Xiaoshan, and check the availability of more than 800 public parking lots.
One of the standout features is the "Real-Time Traffic" module, which organizes locations by administrative districts or commercial areas, making it easy for users to find specific road cameras. The app also uses the user's current location to provide relevant traffic videos and even analyzes driving patterns to suggest optimal routes based on past behavior.
During testing, a reporter searched for "Stadium Road" and was shown several critical intersections, including Stadium Road Zhonghe Road. Clicking on one of them displayed a live video feed of the Meidenggaoqiao area. While the video played smoothly with a Wi-Fi connection, it became choppy when switching to 2G or 3G networks.
Interestingly, the Android version of the app includes features like parking and gas station searches, but the iOS version only supports the "Real-Time Traffic" function and must be downloaded via a QR code. According to officials, the app will continue to expand its services in the future.
To test the app, a reporter from Qianjiang New City used it to plan a trip back to Stadium Road. Using the iPhone version with Wi-Fi, the app showed that roads near Shijiqing and Huancheng East were clear, so the reporter chose that route. It took about 20 minutes to reach the destination, matching the app's prediction.
A telecom representative explained that users can plan their routes, check the roads they'll pass through, and verify conditions using the app’s camera feeds. He added that the app is especially useful for navigating the city efficiently.
Additionally, during testing, the reporter found that using the app on 2G or 3G networks consumes approximately 3MB of data every half minute. For users with limited data plans, it's recommended to upgrade to a higher package for smoother performance. Overall, the "Wisdom Hangzhou" app is a valuable tool for improving urban mobility and daily commutes.
