Suzhou rattan chair industry standard will be formulated in 2015

In recent years, traditional bamboo and rattan roots have been transformed into elegant and functional furniture through the careful craftsmanship of skilled artisans. These handcrafted pieces are now finding their way into homes across the country, admired for their natural beauty and eco-friendly appeal. However, as demand grows, so do concerns over quality and safety. According to the local quality supervision department, a new industry standard for "Wicker Chairs" has recently been approved by the Suzhou Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute. This development marks a significant step forward in ensuring that rattan furniture manufacturers follow strict guidelines—from the selection of raw materials to the final product’s quality. The new standard is expected to bring greater transparency and accountability to the industry. Statistics show that sales of rattan furniture have surged by over 50% in the past two years, driven by its environmental benefits and aesthetic appeal. Yet, with this growth comes an increase in consumer complaints related to product quality. In the city's home inspection lab, many rattan furniture items are found to suffer from issues like poor flexibility, deformation, or cracking. While consumers often rely on test reports to protect their rights, experts point out that these reports can be limited due to the lack of specific standards tailored to rattan products. Gao Donghui, director of the Jiangsu Home Furnishing Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, emphasized that the development of specialized standards for rattan chairs will provide a solid foundation for both consumer protection and regulatory oversight. It will also help set clear quality thresholds for manufacturers, encouraging better production practices and weeding out substandard products. The upcoming "Wicker Chair" industry standard will include detailed specifications for the rattan material used in chair production, covering aspects such as appearance, mechanical strength, and moisture content. For finished products, it will outline requirements for dimensions, durability, and the presence of harmful substances like formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds. A non-destructive climate chamber method will be introduced to detect toxic elements more effectively. Looking ahead, the Municipal Quality Inspection Institute plans to collaborate with testing institutions and local rattan chair manufacturers to draft the standard, taking into account the unique production habits and product characteristics of Suzhou-based companies. The standard is expected to be finalized in 2015, marking a milestone in the rattan furniture industry. Before the standard was established, there were no clear guidelines for testing or quality control. Now, with the new rules in place, the industry is moving toward a more regulated and reliable future.
