Hangzhou Traffic Police Launches Smartphone Software

On January 8, the Hangzhou Public Security Traffic Police Department and China Telecom launched a new smartphone application called “Wisdom Hangzhou.” This innovative app offers users real-time access to traffic conditions across nearly 170 traffic cameras in the city, as well as information on free parking spaces near their location. The app aims to make daily commuting more efficient and convenient for residents and visitors alike. Android users can search for “Wisdom Hangzhou” in the app store to download it, while Apple users need to scan a QR code provided by the media to access the app. The mobile client was officially released after being jointly developed by the Hangzhou Traffic Police and China Telecom, marking a significant step toward smart transportation in the city. During a press conference, journalists and citizens had the chance to experience the convenience of the app firsthand. With the “Wisdom Hangzhou” app, users can check real-time traffic conditions from over 800 public parking lots across the city. They can also handle traffic violations and pay fines via SMS, all within minutes. One of the standout features is the “Real-Time Traffic” module, which allows users to filter traffic cameras by administrative districts or commercial areas. It also provides location-based video updates and even analyzes driving patterns to suggest relevant road segments. For example, when a reporter searched for “Stadium Road,” the app displayed several key intersections, including “Zhonghe Road on Stadium Road,” where a live video feed of the Meidenggaoqiao area appeared instantly. The video playback ran smoothly with a Wi-Fi connection, but performance dropped significantly when switching to 2G or 3G networks, resulting in lag and poor quality. Additionally, while the Android version included features like parking and gas station searches, the iOS version only offered the “Real-Time Traffic” function and required a QR code for download. According to the developers, the app’s services will continue to expand, adding more useful functions in the future. During a test, a reporter used the app to plan a trip from Qianjiang New City to Stadium Road. By checking the traffic conditions on the app, they found that the route through Shijiqing and Huancheng East roads was relatively clear and took about 20 minutes to complete — matching the app's prediction. A telecom representative explained that the app helps users plan their routes effectively by checking the road conditions through the app and verifying them via live camera feeds. This gives a clear picture of the current traffic situation before heading out. However, the reporter also noted that using the app on 2G or 3G networks consumes around 3MB of data every half minute. Therefore, they advised users with limited data plans to consider upgrading or using Wi-Fi for a smoother experience. Overall, the “Wisdom Hangzhou” app represents a promising advancement in urban mobility, offering practical tools to improve daily travel.
