Bamboo and rattan, once simple natural materials, are transformed into elegant and functional furniture through the skilled hands of craftsmen using techniques like bending, weaving, and entanglement. These pieces find their way into homes, admired for their beauty and craftsmanship. However, as the demand for rattan furniture grows, so do concerns about quality and safety.
According to the quality supervision department, a new industry standard for "Wicker Chairs" has recently been approved by the Suzhou Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute. This development marks an important step in ensuring that rattan chair manufacturers follow strict guidelines—from raw material selection to final product quality. The standard aims to bring clarity and consistency to an industry that has long lacked clear benchmarks.
Statistics show that in the past two years, sales of rattan furniture have surged by over 50%, driven by its eco-friendly nature and aesthetic appeal. Yet, with this growth comes an increase in consumer disputes related to product quality. In the home inspection room of the Municipal Quality Inspection Institute, many rattan furniture items are sent for testing due to issues like poor toughness, deformation, and cracking. While consumers rely on test results to protect their rights, experts acknowledge that current testing methods are limited.
For a long time, there were no specific standards for rattan furniture—either domestically or internationally. As a result, technicians often had to refer to wooden furniture standards, which are not always applicable due to differences in materials. This lack of tailored guidelines made it difficult to accurately assess the performance and safety of rattan products.
Gao Donghui, director of the Jiangsu Home Furnishing Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, emphasized that the drafting of specialized standards for rattan chairs will provide a solid foundation for consumer protection and regulatory oversight. It will also help set clear specifications for raw material imports, product sales, and exports, enabling better quality control and filtering out substandard producers.
The upcoming "Wicker Chair" industry standard will include detailed regulations on the appearance, mechanical properties, and moisture content of the rattan used in production. For finished products, it will establish clear requirements for dimensions, strength, durability, and the presence of toxic substances such as formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds. The standard will also outline testing methods to ensure practical applicability.
Looking ahead, the Municipal Quality Inspection Institute plans to collaborate with testing institutions and local wicker chair manufacturers to develop the standard. Drawing from years of experience in national furniture standard development, they will focus on the unique production habits and characteristics of Suzhou-based companies. The standard is expected to be finalized in 2015.
Before the standard was introduced, there were no clear guidelines for quality checks. Now, with the new framework in place, the industry can move toward greater transparency, improved product safety, and more informed consumer choices.
