Currently, there are several types of preservatives commonly used, including CCA, ACQ, and CAB. CCA primarily contains copper arsenic, while ACQ uses an ammonia-soluble alkylamine copper compound. CAB, on the other hand, relies on copper ruthenium as its main component.

When it comes to防腐木(preservative-treated wood), the amount of preservative applied depends largely on the intended use and environmental conditions. Recently, the national standards for preservative-treated wood were updated, offering clearer guidelines for usage.

In the last few decades, the most popular method has been CCA treatment. The primary chemical composition of CCA is chromated copper arsenate, which is non-toxic, odorless, and paintable. It’s highly durable with excellent corrosion resistance, making it a go-to choice for many outdoor applications. Over time, it has proven reliable in various tough environments, providing robust protection for wood.

However, due to the trace amounts of arsenic in CCA, concerns have arisen regarding potential health risks. As a result, since January 1, 2004, the U.S. has restricted the use of CCA-treated wood, except in industrial or specialized settings. Despite this, authorities in the U.S. have stated that there is no scientific evidence proving any harm to human health from CCA. In China, the upcoming industry standards for preservative-treated wood explicitly mention that CCA remains a viable option.

ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) represents another significant advancement in preservative technology. Unlike CCA, ACQ doesn’t contain arsenic or chromium, making it more environmentally friendly and safer for humans, animals, fish, and plants. While ACQ is considered a promising alternative to CCA, studies show it isn’t as stable over time and tends to degrade faster. Additionally, its production cost is approximately 20% higher than CCA. Therefore, domestically, both CCA and ACQ treatments may coexist for some time. As technology progresses, ACQ could eventually emerge as the leading method for treating preservative wood in the future.
