At the moment, preservatives primarily consist of three types: CCA, ACQ, and CAB. CCA’s main ingredient is copper arsenate, while ACQ uses an ammonia-soluble alkylamine copper compound, and CAB contains copper ruthenium.
When it comes toé˜²è…æœ¨ (treated wood), the amount of preservative used depends heavily on the conditions of its application, following the national standards set forth in recent years, particularly the "National Standard for Preservative Wood." For many decades, the primary method of treating wood involved CCA, whose main chemical composition is Chromated Copper Arsenate. This treatment is known for being environmentally friendly, odorless, and suitable for painting over treated wood surfaces. High-quality CCA formulations possess excellent stability and corrosion resistance, making them widely popular. Over time, we’ve learned that CCA-treated wood can endure various severe outdoor conditions, making it an ideal choice for wood preservation.
However, concerns about health risks have arisen due to the trace amounts of arsenic in CCA. As of January 1, 2004, the U.S. banned the use of CCA-treated wood in most consumer applications (excluding industrial or specialized environments). Despite this, U.S. authorities have clarified that there's no scientific proof linking CCA to any health hazards. In China, the upcoming industry standards foré˜²è…æœ¨ explicitly mention that CCA remains a valid preservative agent.
ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary), on the other hand, relies on an alkyl copper ammonium compound as its primary chemical component. Unlike CCA, ACQ does not include arsenic or chromium, posing no environmental harm and ensuring safety for humans, animals, fish, and plants. ACQ is regarded as a promising alternative to CCA. However, studies indicate that ACQ isn’t as durable as CCA and tends to degrade more easily. Additionally, the cost of ACQ is approximately 20% higher than CCA. Thus, domestically, both treatment methods will likely coexist for some time. As technology advances, ACQ could eventually become the dominant method foré˜²è…æœ¨ treatment in the future.
