China’s rail transit system has undergone significant development since the first major speed increase in the late 1990s following the country's reform and opening-up policies. This expansion continued through the eighth round of speed upgrades completed in 2011. For instance, traveling from Shanghai to Nanjing used to take between four to five hours, but now the fastest trains complete the journey in just one hour, with speeds exceeding 350 kilometers per hour. Similarly, the trip from Shanghai to Beijing now takes only five hours. In 2012, Germany's renowned consulting firm SCI Verkehr released a report naming China South Locomotive as the world leader among rail transit equipment manufacturers in 2010. CSR Qishuyan Locomotive Co., Ltd., a modern enterprise, specializes in producing trunk railway diesel locomotives, including popular models like the Dongfeng 8, Dongfeng 8B, Dongfeng 11, Dongfeng 11G, HXN5, and others. Diesel locomotives have played a crucial role in the first six speed-ups of China’s railways, with many being based on CSR designs. Although electric locomotives dominate recent advancements in railway speed, diesel locomotives remain indispensable, particularly for freight transport. Currently, there are over 19,000 operational diesel locomotives. Additionally, high-powered shunting locomotives are in high demand across various sectors, including coal mining and oil industries. Estimates suggest that more than 600 locomotives are updated annually, not including thousands of repaired units.
The challenge of machining critical components in rail transit systems lies in their complexity and precision requirements. Key components like bogies (including carbody bogies and hollow bushings) and diesel engine parts are particularly demanding. Diesel engine components are intricate, requiring high manufacturing precision, tight tolerances, and excellent surface finishes (with accuracy indices often reaching grades 5-7 and surface roughness Ra0.4). These components must ensure interchangeable fit while maintaining high reliability, durability, and safety factors during high-speed operations. For diesel engine components, dimensional accuracy often reaches micrometer levels—a feat once thought impossible.
Despite the growing prominence of electric locomotives, diesel engines continue to hold a vital place in rail transport, especially in freight operations. With ongoing updates and maintenance needs, the demand for both diesel and electric locomotives remains robust, ensuring a diverse and evolving market landscape.
