According to a recent report from the US Food Safety News Network, a study published in the March 5 issue of *International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology* revealed that researchers at Cornell University have identified five new non-pathogenic species of *Listeria monocytogenes*. This discovery expands the known list of *Listeria* species and offers new insights into the genetic diversity of this bacterial genus.
To date, 10 *Listeria* species have been identified, but only two—*L. monocytogenes* and *L. ivanovii*—are known to cause disease in humans and animals. *L. monocytogenes*, in particular, is the primary cause of listeriosis, a serious infection that can lead to severe illness, especially in pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The bacteria are commonly found in contaminated foods such as deli meats, hot dogs, soft cheeses, and raw seafood. Each year, it is responsible for hundreds of infections and several deaths in the United States alone.
This research was part of a broader microbiological study conducted by scientists who collected samples from various environments, including fields, soils, ponds, and streams in New York, Colorado, and Florida. By examining these diverse ecosystems, the team aimed to better understand how *Listeria* spreads and evolves.
The discovery of these non-pathogenic strains could help scientists trace the origins of pathogenic traits within the *Listeria* family. It may also aid in developing more effective strategies for preventing foodborne illnesses caused by harmful bacterial strains. This breakthrough highlights the importance of ongoing microbial research in safeguarding public health.
