On December 3, 2012, the annual meeting of the Sanitary Ware Professional Committee under the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce Furniture Decoration Industry Chamber of Commerce took place at the Fortune Hotel in Lecong, Foshan City, Guangdong Province. Representatives from various departments, including the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, along with members of the sanitary ware committee and industry leaders, were in attendance.
During the roundtable discussion, Xie Yuerong, President of the Sanitary Ware Committee, emphasized the need for regulation within the industry, particularly in terms of capacity planning, cost management, and the proportion of advertising expenditures. She noted that the industry is currently facing an oversupply problem due to each company's aggressive production strategies. As a result, some businesses produce goods based on stock levels rather than actual demand, leading to significant inventory risks during slow market periods. This situation has driven many firms to adopt various promotional tactics, sometimes even engaging in price wars, which ultimately harms profitability.
Xie Yuerong expressed concerns about these practices, stating, "While promotions may temporarily boost sales, they often come at the expense of profit margins. Over time, it becomes increasingly challenging to restore prices." She urged her peers in the industry to prioritize collective interests over individual competition, advocating for actions that benefit the entire sector's reputation.
Moreover, she highlighted the importance of maintaining high-quality standards and brand integrity. "Cutting corners might save costs in the short term, but it undermines long-term brand equity," she explained. Many domestic brands struggle to gain entry into higher-tier hotels like four-stars compared to international competitors partly because of lingering perceptions tied to quality issues. Xie Yuerong stressed the necessity for honesty and transparency within the industry to foster trust among consumers and employees alike.
In recent years, advertising campaigns have become ubiquitous across media platforms, including television channels like CCTV. While some argue that extensive ad spending helps build brand recognition quickly, Xie Yuerong cautioned against excessive reliance on such methods. She recommended balancing advertising budgets carefully to avoid increasing operational costs or inflating product prices unnecessarily. Her suggestion aims to ensure sustainable growth while preserving financial health for all participants in the industry.
Overall, this meeting served as an important platform for addressing challenges facing China’s sanitary ware sector today. By focusing on strategic planning, ethical business practices, and responsible marketing approaches, stakeholders hope to steer the industry toward greater stability and prosperity moving forward.
