One of the biggest changes Jason has witnessed in data capture technology is the ability to analyze data instantly. It enables us to adjust project bids and estimate costs more accurately. Real-time data also allows us to compare orthomosaics with design plans, ensuring that stockpiles don’t end up in places where they might need to be relocated later. Building an in-house drone mapping program proved to be quite costly. Research revealed that the expenses involved—such as purchasing high-performance computers to process data from multiple sites, investing in photogrammetry software, acquiring necessary insurance, and preparing for FAA Part 107 certification—far outweighed the cost of the drones themselves. That’s why we opted to seek external solutions. Among the various drone mapping reports and applications, volumetric analysis stands out as the most useful tool. By tracking specific areas weekly and comparing them to both the final grade and existing terrain, we maintain comprehensive records. These reports help immensely when submitting payment claims and projecting future workloads. The impact of drone mapping on our construction process has been profound. The ability to visualize a project's progress in real-time is invaluable. Knowing exactly what the site looks like at any given moment, complete with 3D models and extracted volumes, helps us gauge resource allocation more effectively.
