Monthly Flyover: How Does Drone Mapping Impact a Construction Project?

I recently had the chance to sit down with Jason Tosi, who works as the Construction Technology Coordinator at i+iconUSA, a diverse group of heavy-civil industrial construction companies. With over two decades of experience in the construction field, Jason shared his thoughts on how drone mapping is transforming the construction industry. During our conversation, we delved into the various applications of drone mapping that Jason finds most valuable, the challenges of developing an in-house drone mapping program, and why real-time data is crucial when bidding on projects. Here’s what he had to say: **Q: As someone with extensive experience in construction, what are the most significant changes you've observed in data capture technology?** A: One of the biggest shifts I’ve noticed is the ability to analyze data in real-time. With drone mapping, we can quickly obtain a detailed snapshot of a project at any given moment, and this has been the most transformative development for me personally. **Q: Why is having rapid access to data so beneficial?** A: Real-time data gives us the flexibility to adjust our project bids and provides a clearer picture of our progress and productivity. For example, by comparing orthomosaics to design plans, we can ensure that stockpiles are placed correctly and avoid unnecessary relocations later on. This not only saves time but also reduces costs significantly. **Q: What was involved in setting up your own drone mapping program?** A: Initially, we thought building an in-house drone mapping program would be straightforward, but after some initial research, we realized it was far more complex and costly than anticipated. The expenses ranged from acquiring powerful computers capable of processing data from multiple sites to purchasing photogrammetry software, securing necessary insurance, and preparing for FAA Part 107 certification independently. Surprisingly, the drone itself turned out to be the least expensive component of the entire setup. That realization prompted us to reconsider our approach. **Q: Which specific drone mapping reports and applications do you find most useful?** A: Volumetric analysis and volume tracking are indispensable for us. We regularly monitor the same areas each week, comparing the finished ground to the existing ground, and maintaining comprehensive records. These reports help immensely when submitting payments and understanding completed work. Additionally, using drone data allows us to assess our production rates, which aids in creating accurate future projections. Having this historical data makes our bids more precise moving forward. **Q: In which aspect of the construction process has drone mapping made the greatest difference for you?** A: Without a doubt, the most impactful benefit has been the capability to get an instant overview of the project. On any given day at 1:00 PM, we have a clear understanding of the current state of the project, including 3D models and extracted volumes. This clarity helps us gauge resource utilization between different points in time and offers a far more accurate estimate of the associated costs. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even greater innovations that will further streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
