In a recent incident that sparked public concern, Ms. Zhang reported to the hotline about a bus driver who was not wearing a seatbelt despite the vehicle being fully occupied. "The seatbelt is the lifeline of safety," she said. "If the driver doesn't care about their own life, how can they be responsible for the passengers' safety?"
Ms. Zhang shared her experience of boarding a crowded bus and standing near the door. What shocked her was seeing the driver without a seatbelt. Later, she noticed that many drivers did not use theirs either.
She posted photos of the driver on social media, which led to widespread discussion online. Opinions varied—some supported the idea that drivers should wear seatbelts, while others believed it was unnecessary or inconvenient.
A reporter from Asian Heart Network investigated the issue by observing 40 buses at various stops in Urumqi. The results were alarming: none of the drivers were wearing seatbelts. On bus number 527, there was no seatbelt at all, and the seatbelt slot was missing. One driver said he hadn’t seen a seatbelt in over five years.
On BRT buses 29 and 302, the seatbelts were hidden behind the driver’s seat, making them almost invisible. Experienced drivers like Chen, who has driven for 12 years, claimed that it's impractical to wear a seatbelt during peak hours. “I have to constantly check the road conditions and clean the windows,†he explained. “It’s inconvenient to be tied down.â€
Another driver from bus 68 admitted he never used a seatbelt while driving. “The bus is long, and there are blind spots when turning. Wearing a seatbelt makes it harder to maneuver.â€
According to local authorities, bus drivers are legally required to wear seatbelts. However, many older buses don’t even have them installed. A company representative mentioned that there is currently no strict enforcement, so drivers who neglect this rule are rarely punished.
The issue has drawn attention from officials, who plan to develop new regulations to ensure drivers follow safety protocols. Meanwhile, the police emphasized that the Road Traffic Safety Law requires all drivers, including those of buses, to use seatbelts.
Urumqi Tianshan District Traffic Police Officer Shen Weibo stated that while not wearing a seatbelt isn’t typically a major offense, it could lead to warnings if detected. He added that failing to wear a seatbelt could cause delays and traffic issues, especially on busy routes.
This incident has raised awareness about the importance of seatbelt use for bus drivers and the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations. As more people speak out, there is hope that changes will soon be made to protect both drivers and passengers.
