Supermarket shopping mall "genetically modified food" should be prohibited "hide and seek"

How to ensure children have access to delicious and safe food at school has become a major topic of discussion during the recent Two Sessions. Food safety is a shared responsibility, and it's something that affects everyone on a daily basis. At this year’s conferences in Kunming, many delegates expressed concerns about the safety of school catering services. From the sterilization of tableware to the regulation of small dining tables, and even the ongoing debate around genetically modified (GM) foods, CPPCC members have raised comprehensive concerns regarding food quality, hygiene, and consumer rights. Song Qing, a member of the Kunming Political Consultative Conference, highlighted the challenges with disposable sterilized tableware, noting that while it's impractical for people to bring their own utensils, there are serious issues with the current system. He proposed stricter management measures to regulate the dishwashing industry. Meanwhile, Sun Mei-hsiu, another CPPCC member, suggested using the role of local sub-district offices to organize a chain of “small dining tables” — a growing trend near schools that provides convenience for students but also raises significant safety concerns. As the saying goes, “disease comes from the mouth.” With increasing public awareness of health, people are now more attentive to dietary hygiene. However, much of the focus remains on the food itself, often neglecting the importance of clean and safe tableware. Song Qing pointed out that only 20.5% of manually sterilized tableware meets safety standards, and chemical residues can still pose health risks. In contrast, centrally sterilized tableware has a 98.5% success rate. Yet, problems persist, such as unclean bowls and questionable quality in some disposable sets. To address these issues, Song Qing called for the swift implementation of the “Kunming City Regulations on Centralized Tableware Disinfection.” He emphasized the need for regular inspections, transparency, and clear reporting channels for consumers. He also noted that some large restaurants use visible disinfection methods, which give customers more confidence. In addition to sterilized tableware, the issue of “small dining tables” around schools has also come under scrutiny. These informal lunch spots provide convenience for students, but they lack proper licensing, supervision, and safety protocols. Sun Mei-hsiu stressed the need for standardized regulations, including health permits, staff training, and strict hygiene controls. She proposed creating a “small dining table” chain managed by local authorities to ensure food safety and reduce risks. Another critical concern is the labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods. Yang Kun, a CPPCC member, pointed out that GM foods are increasingly present in the market, yet consumer awareness and transparency remain low. Many products contain genetically modified ingredients without clear labeling, leaving consumers unaware of what they’re eating. Yang called for mandatory labeling and dedicated counters in supermarkets to help consumers make informed choices. He also urged stronger enforcement of existing regulations to ensure compliance and protect consumer rights. Overall, the discussions at the Two Sessions reflect a growing public demand for better food safety, transparency, and accountability in both school canteens and the broader food industry. As society becomes more health-conscious, the need for clear policies, effective regulation, and greater public awareness has never been more urgent.
