For example, the pressure-type temperature control switch uses gas expansion when heated to increase pressure and achieve switching functionality.

Pressure-type temperature control switches are widely used in industrial applications due to their strong output force and lack of reliance on an external power source. They operate purely through gas, making them suitable for intrinsically safe environments. However, because of their larger size, they are not ideal for small household appliances. Instead, they are commonly found in refrigerators and air conditioners.

A typical refrigerator uses a pressure and temperature switch to maintain a stable internal temperature. Let’s take a closer look at how this device works.

How does a refrigerator thermostat work?

The temperature adjustment knob and cam are used to set the desired average temperature inside the fridge. The warm pack contains “wet saturated steam,” which exists in both gaseous and liquid forms. Common refrigerants like methane or freon are often used because they have a low boiling point and expand easily when heated. The capillary tube connects the warm pack to a bellows. This bellows is made from a highly elastic material. At the beginning, the electrical contact on one end of the lever remains open. When the temperature rises, the wet steam inside the warm pack expands, increasing the pressure. This pressure is transmitted through the capillary tube, causing the bellows to expand as well. As a result, the lever is pushed against the spring's tension, rotating counterclockwise. Once the temperature reaches a certain level, the contact closes, activating the refrigerator’s compressor and initiating the cooling process. When the temperature drops, the steam contracts, reducing the pressure and opening the contact, stopping the cooling cycle. This continuous process helps maintain a consistent temperature within the refrigerator, saving energy in the process. Although the accuracy of this method isn't very high, many modern high-end refrigerators and air conditioners now use frequency conversion technology. Nevertheless, due to its low cost and simple mechanism, this traditional approach remains popular in many households.
