In the previous article, I shared some of the user-centered improvements and upgrades in Zhongwang CAD+. However, you might have noticed that the new version comes with a lot of new features, but at the same time, some functions from the older Zhongwang CAD 2012 have been removed—such as parametric design and 3D rendering. This decision wasn’t easy for us. As the saying goes, "the back of the hand is all meat," meaning it's hard to cut something off when it's part of your product.
But in order to better serve the majority of our users, we had to make tough choices. For example, parametric design was initially introduced because many users told us they struggled with controlling relationships between objects in 2D drawings using traditional methods. We believed it had real value. The feature did solve some issues, but over time, we found that most users weren't adapting well to it. Some were used to traditional 2D design, others found it too limited, and compatibility problems made it difficult to integrate with foreign software.
Because of this, we decided to temporarily remove the parametric function in the new CAD+ version. It was a painful choice, but user experience must come first. By freeing up development resources, we could focus on other important features like dynamic blocks. We still believe in the future of parametric design—it will return to Zhongwang CAD+ in a more user-friendly and compatible way.
Another example is the 3D rendering feature. Some users argued that 2D design software needs powerful rendering, while others didn’t see the need. After careful consideration, we chose not to include it. The previous rendering engine, based on IntelliCAD, was limited and couldn’t meet the high demands of users who needed quality rendering. Instead of keeping an outdated system, we removed it to reduce costs and improve performance. Users who don’t need rendering won’t be charged for it, and we’re actively looking for third-party partners to offer better rendering solutions in the future.
Over time, we’ve made several similar decisions, and there will be more ahead. But through these choices, we’ve developed unique features that enhance usability and efficiency—like smart mouse gestures, a redesigned Ribbon interface, voice commands, intelligent selection tools, and cloud storage integration. Many of these are firsts for Zhongwang CAD+.
Some users have said that Zhongwang CAD+ has moved beyond just being a “substitute†for foreign software. It’s now showing its own character and innovation in CAD development. These efforts are starting to pay off.
In short, our goal is to create a compact, practical, and user-friendly CAD platform. We focus on improving the experience, not on adding flashy features. Everything we do starts with the user, and we're proud of the recognition we've received. That’s what makes us truly satisfied as engineers at Zhongwang Software.
