Mechanical seal installation procedures

First, to ensure the mechanical seal performs effectively, the installation of the sealed equipment must meet the following requirements: 1. When the outer diameter of the shaft (or sleeve) where the mechanical seal is installed is less than or equal to 50mm, the radial runout tolerance should not exceed 0.04mm. For diameters greater than 50mm, the tolerance should be within 0.06mm. 2. The dimensional tolerance for the outer diameter of the shaft (or sleeve) should be h6, and the surface roughness (Ra) should not exceed 3.2µm. 3. Before installation, the shaft, seal chamber (pump cover), and mechanical seal must be thoroughly cleaned to avoid contamination in the sealing area. 4. The axial play of the rotor shaft should not exceed 0.3mm. Second, the installation process: The mechanical seal is typically installed during the pump assembly. Once the pump shaft is mounted on the bearing housing and the bearing housing's sealing components are in place, follow these steps to install the mechanical seal: 1. Confirm that the model and specifications of the mechanical seal match the equipment requirements. 2. Apply a thin layer of lubricant evenly on the parts of the shaft, cavity, and gland that come into contact with the auxiliary seal. If using ethylene propylene rubber or if the medium does not allow oil, use vegetable oil or soapy water instead. 3. Install the pressure cover and tighten the bolts in a diagonal cross-tightening pattern to ensure even compression of the seal against the sealing chamber (pump cover). 4. If the mechanical seal includes an auxiliary system, connect the piping as specified. 5. Place the mechanical seal on the shaft and adjust it to the designed working height. Third, testing procedures: After completing the installation, perform the following tests: 1. Manually rotate the pump and check the torque and look for any unusual resistance or scratches that might indicate improper installation. Adjust if necessary. 2. Open the valve and fill the sealing chamber with the medium, ensuring all air is expelled. Observe the seal for any signs of leakage. 3. If both the torque and leakage checks are satisfactory, proceed with a trial run. Fourth, operational precautions: 1. During operation, monitor the control instruments and check for any abnormal noises or overheating. 2. During the test run, pay attention to changes in vibration and sound. Thermal expansion differences between the shaft and housing may cause vibration, which can lead to seal failure. If this occurs, stop the machine and recheck the alignment of pipelines, couplings, and anchor bolts. 3. At the beginning of operation, check for initial leakage. Some leakage is normal at first, but it should decrease over time and may eventually approach zero. By following these detailed steps, you can ensure the mechanical seal functions properly and extends the life of the equipment.
