This summer has been extremely hot, and air conditioners are working overtime. With the country experiencing a "grill-like" heatwave, many units have been running non-stop, leading to increased demand for maintenance services—especially those related to adding Freon.
According to early reports, over 20 households in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, have recently requested Freon refills. However, experts warn that not all cooling issues are due to a lack of refrigerant. Some problems may stem from other causes, such as clogged filters or poor ventilation.
"If the filter is dirty or the outdoor unit isn't functioning properly, it can reduce cooling efficiency," said an inspector from the Jiaxing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. "Some untrustworthy technicians might exaggerate minor issues, claiming that Freon is missing just to charge extra fees."
So, how often should you add Freon to your air conditioner? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some units can last four or five years without needing a refill, while others may leak after just one or two years due to manufacturing defects or improper installation.
If your air conditioner isn’t cooling well or if the evaporator is frosted, it might seem like a Freon issue. But before jumping to conclusions, try cleaning the filters and checking airflow. If the problem persists, it’s best to call a professional to check for leaks.
The Jiaxing Bureau advises consumers to take advantage of free Freon checks during the warranty period, if available. If the unit is out of warranty, they recommend choosing a reputable repair service and keeping receipts to avoid scams. Always go through official channels for better protection.
