Air conditioning does not cool, it is not necessarily lack of "fluorine"

This summer, air conditioners have been working overtime due to the extreme heat. The nationwide "grill mode" has kept units running non-stop, leading to a surge in demand for maintenance services—especially for "adding Freon." However, many people are unaware that an AC might not actually need refrigerant if it's not cooling properly.

According to early reports, over 20 households in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, have recently requested Freon refills. But experts caution that this isn’t always the real issue. In fact, problems like dirty filters, poor ventilation, or faulty outdoor unit compressors can also reduce cooling efficiency.

"Some unscrupulous repair technicians may exaggerate minor issues, claiming that Freon is missing to justify higher charges," said inspection officials from the Jiaxing Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. "Consumers should be cautious and verify the actual cause before agreeing to any service."

How often should you add Freon to your AC? Experts say there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some units can last four or even five years without needing refrigerant, while others may leak after just one or two years due to manufacturing defects or improper installation.

If your AC isn't cooling well or the evaporator is frosted, it's easy to assume the Freon is low. However, the first step should always be to clean the filters and check for blockages. If the problem persists, it's best to call a professional to check for leaks rather than jumping to conclusions.

The Jiaxing Bureau advises consumers to take advantage of free refrigerant checks during the warranty period offered by manufacturers. If your unit is out of warranty, make sure to choose a trusted service provider and keep all receipts. This helps avoid being scammed by dishonest technicians.

As the summer heat continues, staying informed about your AC’s needs can save you time, money, and discomfort. Always prioritize professional advice over quick fixes, and don’t hesitate to ask questions when getting repairs done.
