Summer loofah (Xia Cugua) is a versatile crop that does not require specific land conditions. As long as it is not planted in a melon field, it can be cultivated successfully. The planting process involves preparing the ground with ditches to manage heavy summer rains. The ditches should be approximately 1.6 meters wide and 1.2 meters deep. Due to the high summer temperatures, germination occurs quickly, so direct seeding is usually sufficient. Before planting, seeds should be soaked for 3–4 hours or germinated for 24 hours after soaking. For planting, use single or double rows, with holes spaced 30–40 cm apart. Place 3–4 seeds in each hole, cover them with about 1.5 cm of soil, and then cover with gauze. After seedlings emerge, keep only 2 plants per hole.
For fertilization and irrigation, water the seedlings 2–3 times during the early growth stage. Apply top dressing at the initial flowering stage, using either 50 kg of compound fertilizer or 50 kg of peanut bran per acre. After each harvest, apply fertilizer again—using 15 kg of compound fertilizer, 10 kg of urea, and 5 kg of potassium. It’s important to maintain moderate moisture levels for the seedlings, as excessive water can hinder root development. During the flowering period, increase watering and spray in the morning and evening on sunny days. Additionally, keep a water layer of 10–20 cm in the ditches during the harvesting period, and drain excess water promptly after rain.
Field management includes inserting bamboo poles when the vines reach 30 cm in length, creating a herringbone frame. Once the frame is set up, allow the vines to settle before guiding them upward. When female flowers appear, evenly distribute the vines and raise them. For hanging the fruit, tie the loofah with a small rope and attach a small stone to help straighten it. This process is typically done 2–3 days after picking. In late-season harvesting, remove any diseased or old leaves to improve air circulation and prevent disease spread.
Harvesting should occur within 35–45 days from planting, with a total harvesting period lasting 50–60 days. From the time the flowers open, it takes about 10–12 days before the fruit is ready for market. Timely harvesting ensures the best quality and yield.
