There are eight strokes in scientific medicine.

Pesticides play a crucial role in pest and disease management, but their effectiveness depends on proper selection and application. Each type of pesticide has its specific target and mode of action, and using the right one at the right time is essential for optimal results. The performance of different pesticides varies significantly depending on the pest or disease being targeted, as well as the stage of crop development. Therefore, it's important to understand the life cycle of pests and the growth stages of crops to ensure that the right product is used at the right moment. For instance, insecticides are most effective when applied during the early larval stages of pests (before they reach the third instar), while bactericides should be used before or at the onset of a disease. Contact herbicides work best during the seedling stage of weeds, and pre-emergence herbicides should be applied before planting or transplanting. Similarly, rodent control is most effective in autumn, when rats are actively foraging for winter food or preparing for breeding in spring. Choosing the correct application method is equally important. Common methods include spraying, dusting, seed dressing, filling, and painting. Each method has its advantages and limitations. For example, when applying sprays, the height and angle of the nozzle should be adjusted based on the crop’s growth stage and the location of pests or diseases. This ensures even coverage and improves pesticide efficiency. For flying pests like cockroaches, aphids, or spider mites, it's advisable to start from the field’s perimeter and use a "cofferdam" approach for better results. In rice fields, leaf transplanting techniques have proven more effective than traditional spraying, saving both labor and chemical use. The principle of proper dosage is "economical and effective." It's not about applying more pesticide, but rather using the right amount based on environmental conditions such as temperature. Overuse can lead to economic waste and potential phytotoxicity, while underuse may fail to control the problem effectively. It’s also important not to rely solely on past experience to increase dosage or concentration, as this can cause toxicity and accelerate resistance. When using new pesticides, starting with lower doses is recommended to reduce costs and delay resistance development. The number of applications should be determined by the duration of the infestation, the severity of the outbreak, and the residual effect of the pesticide. Pests that have long life cycles or high population densities may require multiple treatments. Rotating between different types of pesticides is an effective strategy to prevent resistance. Continuous use of the same pesticide can lead to resistant pests or pathogens, reducing long-term effectiveness. By rotating, you can maintain the efficacy of your control measures. Combining two or more pesticides with different modes of action can help manage multiple pests and diseases simultaneously. This approach broadens the scope of control, enhances efficiency, reduces toxicity, and improves the chances of successful treatment. However, mixing pesticides requires caution. Some combinations can be harmful or ineffective. For example, fungicides should not be mixed with biological agents, and acidic and alkaline pesticides should never be combined. Additionally, mixtures that cause precipitation or plant damage should be avoided. Proper use of pesticides not only protects crops but also minimizes environmental impact and health risks. Improper use can lead to contamination of soil, water, and food products, and even cause poisoning in humans and animals. Farmers must be aware of the safe usage intervals and restrictions on high-toxicity or high-residue pesticides. They should avoid misuse and follow guidelines carefully. When applying pesticides, always spray downwind and position yourself perpendicular to the wind to minimize exposure. This article is published by the China Pesticide Network.
