During the training at the Mechanical Equipment Repair Factory of the Port Authority, the author was involved in the technical upgrade of the Z100 radial drilling machine. The goal was to use this equipment to mill the rotating surface of a door machine, which is a critical component of large-scale port lifting systems. Due to its massive size and weight, the door machine could not be transported into a conventional workshop or processed by standard machine tools, making the task particularly challenging.
The turret bearing seat on the turntable and the cylinder had a diameter of 4,200 mm with a flatness requirement of 0.3 mm. These parts are directly connected to the slewing bearing, which is essential for the smooth operation of the door machine. Working closely with experienced technicians, we successfully modified the Z100 radial drill to perform the required machining. By implementing improved testing and correction methods, we achieved a final flatness of under 0.2 mm, significantly reducing costs and time while delivering excellent economic and social benefits.
**1. Technical Parameters and Sketch of the Door Turntable Assembly**
The dimensions of the 4043 door machine turntable assembly (see Figure 1) are 13,220 mm (length) × 10,146 mm (width) × 4,024 mm (height), with a total weight of 124,512.1 kg. The surface dimensions of the cylinder bracket to be machined (see Figure 2) include an outer diameter of 4,040 mm, an inner diameter of 3,600 mm, and a height of 1,506 mm. The end of the cylinder to be processed (see Figure 3) has an outer diameter of 4,282 mm, an inner diameter of 3,600 mm, and a height of 1,800 mm.
**2. Analysis of the State of the Art Before Improvement**
Given the large size and weight of the door turntable assembly and the cylinder end, there was no prior experience or suitable equipment available for processing. This made external machining risky and potentially detrimental to the overall quality of the door machine. Therefore, the only viable option was to modify the existing equipment to ensure that the required flatness of 0.3 mm could be met. After careful planning and adjustments, the Z100 radial drilling machine was successfully adapted to handle the job.
The radial drilling machine (see Figure 4) has dimensions of 4,390 mm (length) × 50 mm (width) × 4,130 mm (height). Its spindle can span between 540 mm and 3,000 mm, with a working height ranging from 440 mm to 2,100 mm.
