Ships in operation require regular painting to extend the lifespan of their internal and external structures, as well as all onboard equipment. This process helps prevent marine organisms from attaching to the ship’s hull, which can increase drag and reduce fuel efficiency.

To maintain optimal performance, it is essential for ships to follow a long-term, preventive maintenance plan that includes periodic cleaning, repainting, and oiling. These measures ensure the structural integrity and operational efficiency of the vessel over time.

Before applying paint, proper surface preparation is crucial. Here are some key steps involved in the process:

(1) When a ship is in dry dock for repairs, the first step is to rinse the hull with high-pressure fresh water to remove salt deposits from seawater. Afterward, sandblasting or shot blasting is used to eliminate scale and old paint. Any loose material is carefully removed, and the surface must be inspected by a paint representative, a ship's engineer, or a surveyor to confirm it meets the required standards before painting can begin.

(2) In areas where sandblasting is not feasible, such as small sections, manual methods like sanding and scraping can be used to remove rust. Tools like rust hammers and wire brushes are commonly used for this task. Mechanical brushing is often done using pneumatic tools such as grinders, rotating brushes, or air drills. Once the rust is removed, the surface should be cleaned with compressed air, and ideally rinsed with fresh water to ensure it is free of debris.

(3) For two-component paints, it is also necessary to lightly roughen the surface to improve paint adhesion. This ensures the coating bonds properly and lasts longer under harsh marine conditions.
