Ships in operation are regularly painted to extend the lifespan of their interiors, exteriors, and all onboard equipment. This not only protects the structure but also helps reduce marine growth on the ship's hull.

By minimizing marine organisms attached to the bottom of the ship, resistance is significantly reduced, improving fuel efficiency and overall performance.

To ensure long-term protection, it is essential for ships to follow a comprehensive maintenance plan that includes regular cleaning, recoating, and oiling over time. Such a proactive approach helps prevent corrosion and ensures the vessel remains in optimal condition.

Before applying paint, proper surface preparation is crucial. Here are some key steps involved in the process:

(1) When a ship is in dry dock for repairs, the first step is to rinse the hull with high-pressure fresh water to remove salt deposits from seawater. Then, sandblasting or shot blasting (commonly referred to as "sanding") is used to eliminate scale and old paint. Any loose material is removed, and the surface is inspected by the paint representative, the ship’s engineer, or the shipowner to confirm it meets the required standards before painting can begin.

(2) In areas where sandblasting isn’t feasible, such as small sections, manual methods like sanding and scraping are used to remove rust. Tools like rust hammers and brush scrapers are commonly employed. Mechanical brushing is typically done using pneumatic tools such as air drills, grinding wheels, and rotating metal brushes. After rust removal, the surface is cleaned with compressed air and rinsed with fresh water to ensure it is free of debris.

(3) For two-component paints, it's important to prepare the surface by roughening it slightly to improve paint adhesion. This ensures a stronger bond and longer-lasting results.
