Abstract On December 11, 2012, the Ministry of Science and Technology released the results of the fourth operational evaluation for the National Engineering Technology Research Centers (NETRCs). Among them, the National Engineering Research Center for Superhard Materials and Products, based on the Zhengzhou Abrasives and Grinding Research Institute, received high recognition for its outstanding performance. The center was acknowledged for its significant contributions and will continue to receive support from the government.
This fourth evaluation assessed the operational effectiveness of 134 engineering centers that had passed national acceptance and had been in operation for more than two years prior to 2008. To encourage healthy competition and improve the quality of these centers, the Ministry of Science and Technology commended the top 67 centers with excellent evaluation results and planned to provide ongoing support through the National Science and Technology Support Program.
The National Engineering Research Center for Superhard Materials and Products has played a vital role in addressing major national strategic needs, accumulating innovative talents, enhancing engineering capabilities, strengthening industry services, and improving management systems. The center boasts 178 technical professionals and a well-structured R&D team. During the evaluation period, it undertook 20 national-level projects, participated in the revision of 39 national and industry standards, applied for 23 patents, won 2 provincial and ministerial awards, and 2 national key new products. It also added 138 new pieces of equipment, established 4 pilot bases, and set up 12 pilot lines. The first phase of the "Superhard Material Industrialization Base" was completed, creating an effective platform for testing and transforming research outcomes.
Through direct technology conversion and external technology transfer, the center has transferred 50 technologies to the industry. It collaborates with nearly 20 universities and enterprises, provides 21,870 product inspections and 1,587 personnel training sessions for the industry, and actively participates in industry exhibitions, technical forums, and domestic and international exchange seminars. As a result, its leadership, driving force, and demonstration role in the superhard materials and products industry have become increasingly prominent.
