Scientists synthesize new materials that can directly use solar sterilization

Recently, a team of researchers from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed a novel photoelectrode material capable of sterilizing water using only sunlight. Their findings were recently published in the journal "Catalysis Today," marking an important step forward in sustainable water purification technology.

Photocatalytic technology has long been regarded as a promising solution for water treatment due to its low cost, eco-friendliness, and high efficiency. However, traditional photocatalysts like titanium dioxide (TiOâ‚‚) are limited in their effectiveness because they can only be activated by ultraviolet light, which makes up just about 5% of the sun's energy. This limitation has led to a growing interest in developing materials that can efficiently harness visible light, enabling practical applications under natural sunlight or artificial lighting sources.

Under the supervision of Professor An Taicheng and Researcher Li Guiying, Ph.D. student Nie Xin at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry successfully synthesized a new type of N-doped carbon-polymer composite photoelectrode using a simple hydrothermal-calcination method. The material was created using titanium and melamine as precursors, resulting in a unique structure with enhanced visible light absorption capabilities.

Analysis revealed that the composite electrode is primarily composed of carbon, peptides, oxygen, and a small amount of nitrogen. Moreover, it contains numerous functional groups such as carboxyl, amino, and hydroxyl, which significantly improve the interaction between the nitrogen-doped carbon polymer and titanium dioxide. This synergy enhances both visible light absorption and the transfer of photo-generated electrons, making the material highly efficient under visible light conditions.

Testing showed that the composite photoelectrode exhibited rapid and effective photoelectrocatalytic bactericidal activity against E. coli under visible light. These results not only provide a solid theoretical foundation but also offer practical insights for the development of next-generation visible-light-responsive catalysts. The technology holds great potential for environmental applications, especially in the disinfection of drinking water, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods.
