“China Building Materials Research Institute R&D Base” settled in Qingdao, Shandong

On the morning of the 6th, the official unveiling ceremony of the "China Building Materials Research Institute R&D Base" took place in Laoshan District, Qingdao. This new facility marks a significant step forward in the sustainable utilization of industrial by-products, particularly blast furnace slag, which is now being transformed into high-quality building materials through an innovative process developed by the base. The production method, known as "direct manufacturing of building materials from blast furnace hot slag," uses green slag as a raw material to create eco-friendly stone products. This breakthrough fills a critical technical gap in China's efforts to recycle slag waste efficiently and sustainably. The base was established through a collaboration between the China Building Materials Research Institute and Shandong Coking Group, two key players in the construction and metallurgical industries. Xu Delong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, emphasized that enterprises are the driving force behind innovation, and that national industries play a vital role in China’s development. He praised Shandong Coking Group for its progressive approach and noted that its growth represents a positive shift in the country's industrial restructuring. Yao Yan, dean of the China Building Materials Science Research Institute, highlighted the strategic importance of the R&D base. “This is our first branch in Shandong,” he said. “It will establish a research laboratory, send expert researchers, set up post-doctoral stations, and create a platform for innovation and entrepreneurship. It also aims to become a center for international cooperation in green building materials.” The transformation of blast furnace slag—once considered a low-value waste product—into premium stone has been a long-term goal. Zhao Wei, head of the project team and vice president of Shandong Coking Group, explained that the idea of using slag to make stone was first proposed in 2008. However, no such technology had been successfully implemented before. After three years of extensive research and over thousands of experiments, the team finally achieved success. According to reports, this new process not only reduces the need for mining but also helps manage large volumes of slag waste. For every ton of building material produced, it can reduce the extraction of 3 to 8 tons of natural ore. With the potential to utilize 30 million tons of slag annually, the technology could significantly cut down on environmental impact. In terms of economic value, the stone made from blast furnace slag can generate an output of 3,000 to 20,000 yuan per ton. If 10 million tons of slag are processed, it could lead to the creation of an entirely new industry. Wang Qingtao, chairman of Shandong Coking Group, expressed optimism about the future of the R&D base. He stated that the new production process is just the beginning. The base will focus on developing low-carbon, environmentally friendly materials and technologies, with the ultimate goal of becoming a leading center for new building materials research and technology promotion in Qingdao and across the country.
