Tile problem experts take care to avoid trouble

When you come across an issue, it's important to assess the situation and find a practical solution. According to experts, the first step in addressing dark spots on tiles is to determine their cause. Huang Xinhong, a senior engineer from the China Ceramic Industry Association, explains that some manufacturers intentionally add dark patterns to tiles as part of their design. However, if these dark spots are the result of a production error, they can be difficult to fix. "If the dark spots are on the surface of the glaze, sanding might help, but if they are beneath the glaze, it’s nearly impossible to repair," he said.

Consumers who want to address the problem may consider replacing the affected tiles. While this is a viable option, there is a risk of color mismatch between new and old tiles due to different production batches. To avoid this, some homeowners choose to replace the tiles with a different color, which can create a unique and stylish look when done thoughtfully. It's also important to be mindful of the area where the floor meets the wall during replacement. The construction team should carefully handle the boundary to prevent damage to the wall. Since floor tiles are often hard to remove, the bottom row of wall tiles may also need to be taken out, which can lead to damage. Experts recommend that consumers plan ahead by purchasing new wall tiles of appropriate sizes before starting the project.

Common Tile Issues and Their Causes

Many homeowners report problems such as dark spots or cracks on their ceramic tiles. Are these issues signs of poor quality? Let’s explore some common problems:

1. Cracks on the Surface of Wall Tiles

Although rare, some wall tiles may crack due to poor quality or improper installation. Modern brand manufacturers usually conduct strict quality checks before products leave the factory. However, installation errors can still occur. For example, if water isn't properly reserved before laying the tiles, the cement mortar may pull apart the surface, causing cracks. Another possible cause is inadequate base preparation, such as insufficient waterproofing.

2. Water Marks on Floor Tiles After Wetting

Some floor tiles develop temporary water marks after being submerged in water. This is more common in older tiles, as the anti-fouling and water-repellent coating applied at the factory wears off over time. Although tiles are dense, they still have tiny pores. As a result, moisture can seep in and leave visible marks. However, this is considered normal and not necessarily a sign of poor quality. That said, if the water is dirty, it may leave lasting stains.

3. Darkening or Unusual Appearance Over Time

This issue is typically caused by the aging of the tile’s protective layer. Some tiles may show black spots or appear dull due to small cracks or pits on the porcelain surface. Experts note that while these problems can be frustrating, they are often considered product flaws rather than serious quality issues. If the dark spots fall within the acceptable range defined by national standards for the tile’s grade, the product is still considered acceptable.

How to Choose Quality Tiles

To avoid future problems, it's wise to inspect tiles carefully before purchasing. One simple way to check flatness is to place two tiles together face-to-face and see if there are gaps. The smaller the gap, the flatter the tile. For polished tiles, you can test the water absorption rate by dripping water on the back. If the water spreads quickly, the tile has high absorption and lower strength. If the water stays in droplets, the tile is denser and stronger.

If you're concerned about the glaze on the back of glazed tiles, you can soak them in ink or water for a while and observe whether they darken significantly. Tiles that remain unchanged are generally better quality. According to Huang Xinhong, most ceramic tiles on the market are of good quality, especially those from large manufacturers that perform thorough inspections. However, it's still possible to encounter some defective pieces. Therefore, it's advisable to purchase from well-known brands, as this makes it easier to resolve any issues that may arise.
