On the afternoon of May 3, according to informed sources, EU trade officials are set to recommend the imposition of punitive import tariffs on solar panels valued at billions of euros from China. This potential move could provoke a strong reaction from Beijing and is seen as an attempt by the EU to shield its domestic manufacturers from Chinese competition.
The EU is currently grappling with the issue of cheap Chinese solar products flooding the European market. In an effort to support local industries, Brussels is looking to create a more favorable economic environment for European businesses. On Wednesday, EU Trade Commissioner Carlo De Gucht emphasized that the EU should impose taxes on Chinese solar panels. He pointed out that between 2009 and 2011, Chinese production of these goods exceeded global demand by more than three times, leading to significant market imbalances.
According to diplomats, De Gucht will present these proposals during a meeting of EU trade experts. If approved, the temporary tariffs could come into effect before June 6. However, the decision is not final, and there is still room for further negotiations between the EU and China. The proposed tax on Chinese photovoltaic modules could last up to five years, depending on the outcome of ongoing discussions.
