US scientists produce 6-junction solar cells with an efficiency of 47.1%

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory announced that scientists have produced a six-junction solar cell with an efficiency of 47.1% measured under concentrated lighting, thus setting a new world record.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory also pointed out that the efficiency of the same battery under a single solar exposure was recorded at 39.2%.

This work was funded by the US Department of Energy's Office of Solar Energy Technology and described in a new paper in the journal Natural Energy. John Geisz is the first author. Researchers on this project used III-V materials with broad light absorption properties to make batteries with six junctions or photosensitive layers, each designed to capture light in a specific part of the solar spectrum.
