Researchers in China have developed new materials with both discoloration and deformation properties

The Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced on the 1st that a scientific research team at the institute has developed a new type of material that can change color and deform according to demand by imitating chameleons and snakes. It is expected to be used in the field of robots. The research results were published in the materials journal of the international authoritative journal "Cell" on July 31.

According to Du Xuemin, the head of the research team and an associate researcher at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, there are many regularly arranged nanoparticles in the skin of chameleon. When the skin relaxes or contracts, the spacing of the nanoparticles will change, which will change the light. The reflection effect shows the color change visible to the naked eye.

According to this feature, the researchers produced a thin film material similar to the nanostructure of the chameleon skin. By adjusting the length of time the material is exposed to a specific solvent vapor, different color changes can be achieved.

At the same time, the researchers also imitated the movement of snakes and earthworms, so that this new type of material "moves." When the thickness of the solution vapor and the material itself meet certain conditions, the material can have both discoloration and deformation properties.

Du Xuemin said that integrating the two intelligent properties of discoloration and deformation into one material is a major breakthrough in this research. In the future, new materials designed through this concept are expected to be applied to special robots to achieve real-time interaction between the robot and the environment.
