Recently, Prof. Tian Yongjun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and School of Materials Science and Engineering of Yanshan University, was invited to visit the university and gave a wonderful report titled “Artificial Materials Harder than Natural Diamonds”. The report was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor Liu Changsheng, and the Associate Dean of the School of Materials, Professor Lin Shaoliang, Professor Li Xinxin and Professor Yang Huagui, attended the event.

At the report, Academician Tian Yongjun first analyzed the hardness characteristics of natural diamonds, described the history of synthetic synthetic diamonds, and explained the concept and scale of hardness. Subsequently, he introduced intrinsic hardness, extrinsic hardness and Hall-Petch effect around nanocrystals and nano twins; analyzed the correlation between traditional hardness test and strength test by explaining the principle of ultra-high hardness test and error. , proposes viable and transformative new technologies and future prospects. He pointed out that the basic principle and implementation of the hardening and toughening of nano twin structure are applied to advanced ceramics and intermetallic compounds, and it is expected to create a series of new superhard materials. Nanocrystalline crystal superhard materials can be derived from a series of subversive technologies. It will play an important role in the field of equipment manufacturing and high-voltage scientific research.
