Fluke introduces new power quality and motor analyzer

“Leading industry standards and innovation for the future”. Fluke May 2016 - Measurement of mechanical loads generally requires the use of sensors, which are either costly or physically impossible. The new Fluke 438-II Power Quality and Motor Analyzer uses an innovative algorithm that not only measures three-phase power quality, but also analyzes motor torque, efficiency, and speed to determine system performance and detect overload conditions without the need for a motor load cell.

The Fluke 438-II simplifies the motor performance diagnostic process by providing its electrical and mechanical characterization data without interrupting the operation of the motor. Using a proprietary algorithm, the 438-II measures the three-phase current and voltage waveforms and compares them to the rated specifications to calculate the mechanical properties of the motor. The analysis results are expressed in simple data, it is easy to determine the performance of the work, to determine whether adjustments are needed, to prevent failures from causing downtime.

The measurement data provided by the analyzer can also determine the efficiency of the motor under operating load conditions (such as the efficiency of electrical energy conversion to mechanical torque) and mechanical power. Using these measurements, the maintenance engineer can compare the actual operating power of the motor to its rated power to determine if the motor has an overload condition, or conversely, whether the motor power is too large, resulting in wasted energy or increased operating costs.

The 438-II is part of the Fluke 430 II series of three-phase power quality analyzers, which provide first-line fault diagnosis and long-term trending to ensure smooth operation of the equipment.
